Name: Re:Zero Starting Life In Another World

Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Psychological, Thriller, Isekai.

Only minor spoilers included

Re:Zero Starting Life In Another World aired from 4 apr 2016 – 19 sept 2016 and consist of 25 thrilling episodes. The anime was produced by Studio Whitefox and is another anime of the popular Isekai genre.

Story

The story starts off with our protagonist Subaru taking a stop at the local gas station when he is suddenly teleported into a fantasy medieval like word. It didn’t take long for Subaru to get himself robbed but luckily, a silver haired woman that calls herself Satella saves Subaru just in time. To repay Subaru decides to repay her kindness by helping Satella finding an insignia that was stolen from her. This results in them getting into a bloody death only for Subaru to discover his power of return by death. He uses this to return to a previous point on his timeline, which allows him to correct his mistakes. This method of time travel often feels like a video game, where he is able to return to a save point anytime he dies until he makes it to another checkpoint. This does not make his journey easy by any means as he usually has enormous difficulty getting through the obstacles set before him.

At first Subaru can acts obnoxious because he believed he was some sort of awesome protagonist destined for greatness in his new fantasy world. However his little bubble is destroyed as he dies several times throughout the first episodes.

Characters

Our protagonist Subaru starts off as a loud mouthed and obnoxious and annoying character that you really just want to punch. However, once you finally hit the turning point you begin to feel for Subaru as he loses his life and has to go through so much suffering. You see Subaru begin to realize the seriousness of this world. He begins to mature as his mind gets completely broken. You see Subaru lose himself to madness only to snap out of it and become this righteous hero, but the hero part doesn’t happen right away. I honestly want to tell more about other characters but it would ruin the whole experience of this great anime.

My opinion on Re:Zero

This Anime might look like just another Isekai anime that brings nothing new to the table, which was also what I thought at the beginning. However as the pace started to speed up, the anime only got better and better and I got more intrigued by the story and the unique characters. The story starts off slow and slowly builds up to those dramatic, emotional and action filled moments that we all know and love.

My personal rating 7,8/10

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Fullmetal Alchemist
MAL Score: 9.24/10
Episodes: 64
Genres: Action, Military, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Magic, Fantasy, Shounen

Introduction

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” is an alternative retelling of Hiromu Orakawa’s manga, but comparing to the original anime series, it covers the whole story and has a more reasonable ending. This anime has easily taken its top place in all rankings due to its thrilling story, spectacular fights, rich world lore and etc.

Law of Equivalent Exchange

“In order for something to be obtained, something of equal value must be lost”. This is the core, on which alchemy is based. Alchemy is everything in the world of “Fullmetal Alchemist”. It is a local type of magic, that allows to create something out of something. But of course, there are different consequences and there are some restrictions for using it. For example, creating a person or a chimera (mix of different species, abomination) is forbidden, as it is dangerous and it hasn’t been successful before.

The setting

The story is about two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who lost their mother, when they were kids, and who decided to revive her using the alchemy. As expected, it was a complete failure and both brothers lost a lot: Edward now uses the prothesis for his right hand and leg and Alphonse only’s got his soul attached to armor. Now they seek the Philosopher’s Stone, which can overcome the Law of Equivalent Exchange, to return Alphonse’s body. But slowly and steadily, they face the political repressions in the country and they find out the murky history of their country’s government, so their initial task comes on the second place.

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” is rich in interesting characters, who are unique to each other. Edward, while serving the military as the state alchemist, meets a lot of different people and creatures, that behave and live solely on their principles. For example, there are Seven Deadly Sins, who serve their creator, or Colonel Roy Mustang, who is seemingly harsh and cold to his colleagues, but he is really a caring and fair person.

Conclusion

Overall, it is understandable and pretty clear, why
the whole anime community treasures this anime . It consists of everything, that makes the anime really interesting and worth watching (and then rewatching multiple times). Furthermore, there have been several movies and specials, which boosted its popularity. The world of “Fullmetal Alchemist” has a lot of potential for development in novels, other series. Unfortunately, the story is told, and doubt we are getting something else from this universe. The only thing we can do is just rewatching the series – the classics never become outdated.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
MAL Score: 8.53/10
Episodes: 12
Genres: Comedy, Psychological, Romance, School, Seinen

Caution — There will be spoilers ahead.

Enter lead character Kaguya Shinomiya: a wealthy and talented student from Shuchiin Academy. Sheltered her whole life, Shinomiya doesn’t necessarily know how to interact with people and sees them as a tool to be used, not as a person to talk to and get to know. After joining the student council, all that starts to change. Don’t tell anyone — even if it’s pretty obvious — but Shinomiya is head-over-heels in love with Shirogane and the feelings are reciprocated! Though neither of them are daring enough to admit it. And so starts the war between two people — who will admit their undying affection to the other?

Story

The story of Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane is one packed with joy and excitement. Although they may not show it on the outside, we get to see the world through the eyes of each of the characters in shifts. We get to hear every thought that courses through the head of Shinomiya and then, in turn, through Shirogane. Back and forth in one episode they argue about who’s going to eat a piece of cake while in the next they argue about where to go during summer vacation only to realize, once they reach a decision, that they’d rather have it another way.

Characters

The development put into Kaguya Shinomiya is phenomenal. In the first episode, Shinomiya is cold and aloof to a point. Due to being smothered inside her whole life with her studies, she is unable to get close to people and make friends. In one episode, we get to see Shinomiya looking out the window of the limousine that takes her to school every day. There, she stares at the kids having fun with envy. By the end of the series, we have Shinomiya in tears because all she wants to do is watch the fireworks with her friends on the student council.

Enjoyment

Who knew that the war between two lovers could be so comedic? Throughout this anime, I found myself overwhelmed with laughter that was spilling uncontrollably forth. From the “love guru” Chika Fujiwara all the way to the hardworking Miyuki Shirogane, I found myself falling inlove with these characters and the story that unfolds.

My final rating for this series would be an eight out of ten. The way that the characters were portrayed works perfectly with the goal of the show. I’m not usually one for romance but I love psychological anime. Who knew the two would mix so well.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The most hype anime to exist! 🔥🔥

Media: Anime
Name: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Gurren Lagann)
MAL Score: 8.72/10
Episodes: 27
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Mecha, Sci-Fi, Shonen

No Spoilers at All

Where do I begin with this anime? This anime in all honesty is the most fun I’ve had in awhile. When I thought the anime couldn’t one up itself it just keeps going and just shoots through the roof and doesn’t stop. The best way I can describe the animes over the top-ness is; “It’s so extreme with their own ideas it will always want to one-up it’s own idea with an even more EXTREME AND EPIC concept”. It takes the common tropes of Mecha/Sci-Fi animes and just parodies it and dials that stuff to 200.

Summary

When watching this anime throw out all logic, throw out everything you’ve learnt about life and anime. This anime is best watched with your brain turned off and just enjoy the experience. Enough with praising and get down to the juicy juicy meat. This anime is as Mech and Sci-Fi you can get I have never thought about touching Mecha’s but this just hooked me in. It takes the most imaginative ideas from their own team then runs with it at light speed and hits you over the head with its ridiculousness. It may contain 27 episodes but I damn felt like it was 12. I personally felt so engrossed with this anime I just wanted to watch one after another like there was no care in the world about time or commitments.

Note: This anime is very shonen as it can get; even if you dislike the genre I just want you to just give this anime a shot it’s so worth your time.

Context

I don’t want to spoil anything to much about the characters or the plot, so I’m just going to give the most simple and straight to the point with the Main Characters personalities and a very generalised plot synopsis.

Characters

Kamina: The idolic older sibling that motivates you to no end. He will achieve his goals in the most roundabout way. He is the life and blood of the main characters Ideals.
“Do not believe in yourself. But believe me, I believe in you”

Simon: He idolizes Kamina and wants to be just as great as him. He has his own quirks and flaws but he does everything in his power to GO BEYOND his own limitations and achieve something he never thought he could.

“MY DRILL IS THE ONE THAT PIERCES THE HEAVENS”

Yoko: This is the love interest between the main characters but she don’t have time for that she’s a freaking boss with her sniper rifle and she’s very effective with a majority of weapons. She motivates the characters and she’s fundamental to both of the characters drive.

I really want to go into my details about the other characters but I want to leave that delicious part for you to experience.

Plot

In a desolate dangerous and unforgiving world where a majority of civilisation live in massive underground communities. A band of heroes decide to break free from these chains and achieve things that they could have never of thought of accomplishing.

Conclusion

Overall I just want to want you to just give this anime a shot. It’s so worth every second. There’s so much passion in every aspect of this every up and down the characters experience has so much passion in it. Don’t EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE STELLAR MUSIC TRACK.

Fun Trivia: 40% of the total budget used was dedicated to the last 5 episodes of the anime and the money is well spent. You will experience something that will leave you speechless.

Score

So my scoring system I rate each aspect of the anime out of 5 and there is a total of 5 categories:

Art: 🖌️🖌️🖌️🖌️
Music: 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
Plot: 📖📖📖
Hype: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Enjoyability: 😂😂😂😂😂

Art: 4
Music: 5
Plot: 3
Hype: 6
Enjoyability: 5

Editor Note: I know I literally just broke my own scoring system but gosh darn I just passionately love this anime and how unique it is. I do apologise for such a messy review, it’s my first ever review and would greatly appreciate feedback!

Violet Evergarden Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Violet Evergarden
MAL Score: 8.62/10
Episodes: 13
Genres: Fantasy, Drama, Slice of Life

Caution — There will be spoilers ahead.

After serving in the war, Violet Evergarden comes out with two things: mechanical arms and hope that she’ll get to see Major Gilbert again. Unbeknownst to her, he had died in the last battle of the war. Throughout this beautiful anime, Violet yearns to understand one thing: what “I love you” means. She wants to feel it — to know what the Major meant when he said his last words to her.

|| Story

Violet quickly learns what she wants to be — an auto-memory doll. Under the guidance of her boss, Claudia Hodgins, and fellow auto-memory doll Cattleya Baudelaire, Violet begins her training. An auto-memory doll’s job is to take their client’s true feelings and transfer it to the page they write on. We watch the trips and falls that Violet makes, but each time she gets back up and tries again. Unable to feel emotion but wanting to so badly, Violet meets client after client and soon becomes the most requested auto-memory doll in service. Day after day she waits for word from Major Gilbert, telling her that it’s time to come back and serve in the war by his side.

|| Characters

The only one that showed Violet life outside war was Major Gilbert. In the beginning, she was a gift from Gilbert’s brother. Nothing more than a tool. She was unable to perceive emotion and didn’t know how to talk. She was raised as a tool for the army and little more. From day to day, she followed commands and slaughtered countless people with little remorse. Later in the anime, Hodgins tells Violet that she is on fire and has many burn marks due to the actions that she made in the war. She becomes more aware of people’s emotions and feels guilty for the pain and suffering of others, even when she isn’t the cause of it.

We get to feel the soul-wrenching hurt and heartbreak when we find that Major Gilbert has passed away. After finding out that he is gone, Violet feels guilty about living herself and feels that she doesn’t have the right to be happy when he is dead. By the end of the anime, Violet learns what the words “I love you” means.

|| Enjoyment

I loved watching Violet Evergarden grow as a character. In the beginning, Violet is introduced as a weapon that follows the command of others. In the last episode, though, Violet tells Dietfried, Gilbert’s brother, that she doesn’t need orders anymore. She is ready to live her own life.
My final rating of this anime is a nine out of ten. The art and music tie together perfectly for a dramatic effect. The development of the main character is phenomenal.

Megalo Box Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Megalo Box
MAL Score: 8.05/10
Episodes: 13
Genres: ActionSci-FiSlice of LifeSportsDrama

Megalo Box aired from April 6 2018 to Jun 29 2018 by studio TMS Entertainment tells us a story of underground fighter called Joe, also show is tribute to other very good, old title called “Ashita no Joe”, review can contain minor spoilers, with this lets start.

Story

Story take place in indefinite future, and tells us story of underground illegal fighter who takes name “Joe”, as his life is mainly filled with non-interesting events and set matches, till day when he mets official world-box champion – Yuuri and fight with him… what kind of story and destiny awaits those two? Did Joe will reach “top of the world” as underdog? See and watch for yourself.

Characters

Main focus is on two characters – Joe and Yuuri, their pasts, struggles and current problems, there is also bunch of other important characters like Joe’s coach – Nanbu, Shirato family, or syndicate boss – Fujimaki and few others.

Joe – “Underdog” and talented fighter, is rather cheerful and confident person, strong mentally and physically gives us rather interesting protagonist, he is equivalent of “ashita no joe” main character – Joe

Yuuri – Current champion – World strongest fighter, usually have rather confident personality, but also kinda bored and even bit arrogant attitude to due not worthy/interesting opponents, he is equivalent of Tooru Rikiishi in “Ashita no joe”.

Nanbu – Always struggling with debts, scared of many things Joe’s coach,he is the one who sets fights for Joe and also went through biggest mental changes in entire show, what they are? See for yourself. Overall Megalo box have rather interesting pack of characters with many faces and various personalities.

Music

Personally for me best part of entire Megalo Box, amazing amount of various music, with many, many great songs like even memorable main theme of the show “Megalo Box”, sachio theme, bangachi theme and many others, with various genres of music, nicely fitting most scenes.

For final summary

Megalo Box is pretty decent drama/sports show with plenty of character development, climatic vibe and scenes, great soundtrack (which made some scenes even more “powerful” or just great), struggles and drama, fights is pretty good story for me, if you are looking for something more character focused along with sports and unique vibe – I can easily recommend Megalo Box.

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor! Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor
MAL Score: 8.31/10
Episodes: 26
Genres: Game, Psychological, Seinen, Thriller

Potential light spoilers ahead

Do you have a sweet spot for psychological anime? Stories that feature the main character scrapping with others in a battle of wit? If you’re hungry for more mind games from a rivalry akin to Light and L, continue reading. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor (Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji) is probably what you’re looking for.

Story

Kaiji Itou is a lonely, lazy man that is always in debt. His daily routine consists of drinking beer, gambling, and stealing hubcaps from expensive cars. At first glance he may appear to be nothing more than a useless bum in society, but underneath that rugged exterior, is a man with a hidden gift. Kaiji is a genius with a gift for gambling. A unique ability that might have the potential to rescue him from drowning in his current debt. Desperate and out of options, Kaiji is presented with an opportunity to pay off this debt — by competing in a shady game of chance against other debt enslaved individuals. Unbenownst to Kaiji, this is where he would begin to unravel a world filled with cold-hearted deception.

Art

The unusual art style is easily the first thing you’ll notice. Admittedly, I was initially turned off by Kaiji’s gritty, ugly aesthetic. It’s definitely a style that strays from the norm. Thankfully, the story was gripping enough for me to look past this and continue watching. A few episodes in, I actually started to get attached to the hideous world of Kaiji. The exaggerated facial expressions make the tense situations even more gut wrenching. I quickly realized the gritty, ugly aesthetic is all too fitting for the world of Kaiji.

Sound

Both Kaiji’s intro and ending song do a fantastic job at getting you hyped for our hero’s next mental battle. The voice acting is above average, but where Kaiji really shines is its narration. Tachiki Fumihiko’s dramatic narration explaining each character’s thought process is hilarious and gripping at the same time. This narrator could make any mundane task seem epic. There is a recurring “zawa” sound that represents the characters being in uncomfortable situations. This Fukumoto trademark onomatopoeia paired with tense music has you feeling just as nervous as the characters in the show.

Characters

The list of abnormalities in this anime continue to grow as I reflect on the show’s characters. You won’t find a single female character in this anime. The entire roster is made up of men and Kaiji Itou is the only character with any actual development. Kaiji is heroic to a fault, his trusting nature is often his downfall. Betrayal after betrayal, his cynicism grows throughout the story. Hopeless situation after hopeless situation, he has to get even more bold with his tactics in order to survive. You’ll be rooting for Kaiji all the way as the other characters are impossible to like.

Conclusion

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor is easily one of the most addictive anime I’ve ever consumed. I effortlessly powered through all 26 episodes of the first season in one day. Despite this, be prepared to watch both seasons as the first season has a slightly unsatisfying ending. Also, there is a certain arc in the second season that goes on a little too long for my liking. These minor flaws hardly put a dent in the anime, consequently, I rate Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor an 8.5/10. If you consider yourself a fan of psychological thrillers, do yourself a favor and watch this immediately.

Mob Psycho 100 Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Mob Psycho 100
MAL Score: 8.52/10
Episodes: 12 + 13
Genres: Action, Slice of Life, Comedy, Supernatural

There will be minor spoilers for Mob Psycho 100 ahead

From the creator of the super popular One Punch Man comes another anime, being Mob Psycho 100. After a pretty popular season one in 2016, Mob received a second season which began airing in 2019. Immediately, the second season garnered a ton of praise, soaring to the top of the MyAnimeList charts. When rated this high, it becomes harder for shows to live up to the hype. Can mob take on this task?

Summary

Mob Psycho 100 is a story which revolves around our main character, Kageyama Shigeo, or Mob. In a world that has espers, Mob has extremely powerful psychic powers. However, that’s really all he has going for him. He comes across as boring, unathletic, unattractive, and average in most other categories. Opposite of Mob is his brother, Kageyama Ritsu. Ritsu is everything Mob isn’t; he’s attractive, athletic, smart, outgoing, but he doesn’t have psychic powers. We also have Reigan Arataka, Mob’s mentor. Reigan claims to be a psychic himself, but he’s really just a con-artist. However, Reigan really does seem to care for Mob, teaching him not to use his power on other people regardless of the circumstances.

The story mostly focuses on Mob and Reigan exorcising different spirits they hear about until a more central enemy is brought up. At that point, Mob Psycho 100 becomes more serious and drops a lot of the comedy shown earlier on in both seasons.

Review

A lot of Mob Psycho’s success comes from its characters. Reigan in particular is a fantastic character. The first season mainly focuses on how important Reigan is to Mob, but a lot of their past is unexplored. This gets resolved in the second season, where their past is explained and its shown that Mob is just as important to Reigan. Even if Mob himself is a little boring as a character, Reigan’s eccentric personality and the bond he shares with Mob is enough to carry the show.

The plot isn’t super complex, but that’s mostly because the show relies on the characters for the entertainment value. The plot boils down to an outcast at school trying to help people using his powers with the aid of his master. This isn’t to say the plot is boring though, as there are several parts which I believe are very well written. The plot consistently sets up moments where the characters and animation can shine.

Speaking of animation, that’s perhaps the most notable feature of Mob. Its simplistic art allows for the animation to be extremely fluid and make use of vibrant colors to really depict psychic powers as something, well, magic. There are very few times when I feel like the animation for Mob Psycho 100 isn’t superb.

Conclusion

I really do believe that this series deserves the praise that it gets. The characters and how they interact are fantastic, and its paired with gorgeous animation. As for the score I give it, the first season would be an 8/10 and the second season a 9/10, due to the increase in complexity of some of the characters.

Dragon Ball Z: Goku Character Analysis

Goku’s Flat Character Arc

Goku essentially is a character that does not change as situations around him change and times change. He has what is called a “Flat Character Arc”, which means “the character starts out already in possession of the Truth—and then uses that Truth to bring positive change to the world around him. As such, the Flat-Arc protagonist is a person who, on the specific level of the Truth, has things figured out.” Goku in that sense is an archetype, representing the epitome of that character style. Goku in his 50s isn’t very different from the Goku that we meet when he begins this journey as a 10 year old, and that’s after he reaches an incredible amount of physical strength and dealing with some of the most insurmountable enemies in the series.

Before we discuss the subtleties of his character I think its best we dispel some myths about the man himself. He is in no way the strongest character in the series for most part of the story line, he has never actually beaten Vegeta in a duel. The reason Vegeta is always on the edge about beating him is not something that’s ingrained in his nature, its just the way his fights with Goku has always turned out to be. In their first fight Vegeta almost killed him after transforming into his Great Ape form. That fight was interrupted by other Z fighters and Goku was more or less defenseless and almost certainly would have lost and most probably died because of it, had it taken its natural course. In their second duel Vegeta in his Majin form wiped the floor with him and left him lying on the floor it was more or less his own fault that, that this particular fight ended in that outcome, he concealed his ability to transform into a Super Saiyin 3, which ultimately let Vegeta to exploit it.

Personality

His naivety has led him to make some decisions which ordinarily in the right state of mind you wouldn’t want to make, like giving Cell a senju bean. To add to this Vegeta is stronger than Goku on multiple instances for example, when he emerges from the Hyperbolic Time chamber to challenge Cell. This explains the rougher edges in the personality of Vegeta more than anything else, because for the good part of the series the outcomes usually indicate that Goku is the strongest Z fighter and possibly the strongest in arc however Vegeta’s essentially higher win rate and his own mental outlook on Goku’s strength stand to contradict this judgement on everyone else’s part.

His professional record as a fighter only reinforces the belief that he does not always cares about winning in these tournaments, fights or coming off as the strongest fighter of them all. He has won only 1 tournament even though he participated in 9 of them. He has lost to Jacki Chun, Tien. He forfeited in the Cell games, and in the Other World’s tournament was a disqualification. His fights with Vegeta are known to be brutal and not in his favour both times. The only person he has ever defeated in a tournament Finale is Piccolo.

Having said all this, there were times when he was left in a state where he could have died had his bouts continued, the only two times he has ever died are because of self-sacrifice on his part. Both when he first held his brother Raditz so Piccolo can kill him and when he contained Cell.

Characterisation

Goku seems to have attained some sort of metaphorical enlightenment in this series, he does falters sometimes like when he snapped in his ssj3 form when his plan didn’t go as he expected it to, but at for a good part of anime he seems to have some sort of other worldly confidence in his own self and the universe. Many times he showed he was above the entire progression of story line itself for example when he was ready to give up earth in one of the arcs which truly represents Flat Character Arc at its finest. It doesn’t means he is careless or too dumb to actually understand whats going on. It just shows the character is complete without the arc.

This is also one of the trappings of such character. A lot of people would use this as an accuse to bash DBZ and one of its chief protagonist, saying things like “This anime is same as it was in Ep1.”, “Oh he is just going to rely on another power up to solve every crisis…”, “Well it gets really boring because all arcs are so similar”, all this just represents ignorance on the part of the watchers because they fail to notice the emotional and mental maturity Goku goes through as the story line progresses. Yes certain things like his core character is not going to change, but that’s what make him so unique, that doesn’t means he is not going to gain anything as the anime progresses. That’s just false assumptions based on one observation that the character seems way ahead of the arc and confident that all is going to turn out well most of the time.

Yes the 10 year old Goku is very similar to the Goku that appears in the DB Super, but they are both on entirely different planes of emotional maturity. Remember Goku did sacrifice himself on two occasions since the beginning of the series.

This article attempts to draw out some fine points with regards to Goku’s Flat Character Archetype. Such characters are truly rare in anime. In fact Goku can be used as a yard stick for perfect Flat Character Archetypes. We hope you enjoyed the DBZ experience with him if you watched DBZ in past, feel free to come by and discuss about Goku and other characters from any other anime on our anime discord AnimeSoul (WLA).

Devilman Crybaby Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Devilman: Crybaby
MAL Score: 7.96/10
Episodes: 10
Genres: Action, Dementia, Demons, Horror, Supernatural

There will be minor spoilers for Devilman Crybaby ahead

The anime that took the world by storm in early 2018, Netflix’s Devilman Crybaby. Reception of this series ranges from being called utter garbage to an absolute masterpiece depending on who you ask, but where does it really fall? How successful was director Masaaki Yuasa in trying to give people another classic?

Summary

Akira Fudou is a kind-hearted and gentle boy. He and his friend Miki Makimura both run on the track team in addition to living together while Akira’s parents are overseas. One day, while walking home with Miki, Akira comes across an old friend, being Ryou Asuka. Ryou takes Akira in his car to tell him of a discovery he’s made: devils.

While studying in South America, Ryou had witnessed one of his colleagues transform into a devil. To further look into these devils, the two boys go a Sabbath, which is an immoral party where devils commonly form. Like anticipated, devils begin possessing the guests of this party, until one eventually possesses Akira. Just when it looks like Akira is done for, he is able to overcome the devil, becoming what he dubs “Devilman”. The once gentle and kind-hearted Akira is now vulgar, rude, and tough. However the one trait he keeps is the sympathy he keeps for other people, crying whenever other people feel sad.

Review

If it wasn’t clear already, Devilman Crybaby isn’t a show for everyone. Its heavy gore and sexual nature can be a big turn-off for many. However, looking at aspects like plot and character, I believe Devilman Crybaby does a great job. The plot, while not being super complex, is great. There were some necessary updates to the original script, like Akira crying and the track and field aspect. These were pretty hit or miss for the most part but it worked in making a 46 year old manga feel fresh.

As characters, Akira and Ryou play off of each other nicely because of their difference in morality. Akira still cares for other people, even after his transformation into Devilman. However, Miki felt like a relatively awkward character in the show. She doesn’t really do much until the later episodes, and even then her character wasn’t the best. I can’t say much more without spoiling though.

Now to get into the shows strong point: the directing. Masaaki Yuasa (Ping Pong the Animation and The Tatami Galaxy) is an extremely well renowned director, and he didn’t disappoint. He brought his unconventional animation style in order to portray devils truly as otherworldly creatures. Unfortunately, Devilman Crybaby isn’t as polished as his other works, having the animation look off at times. In terms of the soundtrack, there’s one very good and memorable song, but there isn’t much past that.

Conclusion

Overall, Devilman Crybaby is a very high quality show. It gives us crazily animated devil fights along with an interesting conflict of morals between Ryou and Akira. Like I said previously, some of the modernization attempts fall flat, especially towards the end, and the animation isn’t always consistent, but that doesn’t take away the good of the show. I would consider Devilman Crybaby to be a very strong 8/10, mostly because of the strength of the main characters and directing.
