Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken
MAL Score: 8.26
Episodes: 24
Genres: Fantasy, Shounen

WARNING. Review below can contain minor spoilers.

Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken aired between October 2018 to march 2019 by studio 8-Bit, based on light novel with same title, written by Fuse.

Story tell us about Satoru Mikami (37 years old) who is (who would expect?) a salary man, who dies to unfortunate circumstances and reincarnate in new world as….Slime!

As typically for most of Isekai franchise our hero gets brand-new, cheat-like ability, then as mentioned – reincarnates in totally new world.

Same fact that our hero reincarnates as slime makes entire story bit more original than usual isekai title where most characters reincarnates as humans.

Plot

Personally I found Slime story rather average. Rimuru is not hero who suddenly needs save world, fight demon lord or deal with other form of threat. He is more of world exploring/his adventures in it, if we are at world building – in my opinion, reincarnated as slime did it pretty well, with various characters, countries and races. Same plot is also in more relaxed manner; action is served in rather medium/slow manner.

Characters

Tensei Slime have rather interesting bunch of characters, sadly 24 eps felt like not enough to develop and express them properly. Some of them were still noticeable. Let me start from our main hero – Rimuru. What I like within his character is that he is not as usual. He overly naive or “justice Mary sue” white knight who’s main target is to spread justice, equality or similar things. He is rather person who cares about his friends and peoples and don’t hesitate when there is need of eliminate threat, which makes him bit more interesting than usual isekai hero.

Another character who had rather big impact on story was Shizue which is revealed in later stages of story. With her regrets, story, secrets and dreams, what they are? Watch and see for yourself.

There is also bunch of other characters and races (wolves, goblins, dwarfs, elves, demons, orcs, one with rather interesting backstory and development) or even tsundere dragons.

Animation

Most of times tensei slime got very impressive visuals. Especially first episodes were made with great, smooth animation, colors, and great backgrounds. Sometimes some eps were inconsistent had some weird “potato/derp” faces. One thing which I feared – was CGI, widely used in many shows. At least in current times, luckily I admit, animators did very good job with CGI usage and it never felt out of place or just plainly bad. Overall, in terms of art/animation studio 8-bit did great job.

Final thoughts

If you are looking for more original “reincarnated as….in another world” or just “isekai”, in rather calm, chill manner where MC discovers new world and live his daily life in new fantasy world I can recommend this show.

9/10

Soul Eater Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Soul Eater
MAL Score: 8.01/10
Episodes: 51
Genres: Action, Fantasy, Comedy, Supernatural, Shounen

Introduction

I can describe this anime in 3 words: witches, madness and weapons. Those three words usually don’t come together, but Soul Eater makes them collaborate just fine. After it started airing in 2008, it became dramatically popular for its unique setting.

While going on with the story, somewhere in the end, you might note to yourself that the story pace has rapidly increased, and you wouldn’t be wrong. The original manga had some sort of small hiatuses, so anime caught up with it pretty fast. To make it so the anime didn’t have to go on hiatus, the decision was made to finish it in its own way. To be honest, I didn’t like the ending due to absurdness of the situation overall. If you want to see the good ending for this story, I suggest you to read the manga, as it is just better than anime itself in terms of plot development.

The actual plot

Soul Eater Evans (Soul for everyone) studies in Death Weapon Meister Academy to become the Death Weapon. During the practice he hunts different monsters that appear in Death City, where most events occur. But he does it in a pair – with the help of his meister, Maka Albarn. So basically they are two protagonists of the whole story. Then need to get 99 souls of regular monsters and a soul of a powerful witch to fill the requirement for becoming the Death Weapon. Of course, something goes wrong… as usual.

The topic of madness – as some important characters are getting affected by it in the story – is the another key point of Soul Eater. Some characters can become quite philosophical while talking about this interesting characteristic of human personality. They try to find out whether it is good or bad, can it be harmless or does it cause only destruction, both mental and physical, and etc. The question of sanity might hook up people that tend to discuss some difficult causes.

Summary

Soul Eater was good on its release and is still great to watch in our time. Due to its unique setting and some interesting and important questions for discussion, it’s become a classic in the anime industry, having shined during its own period, but still appealing to modern community.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen
MAL Score: 8.49/10
Episodes: 12
Genres: Comedy, Psychological, School, Romance

Chances are that if you’ve been around the anime community within the past month, you’ve seen The Chika Dance at some point. This clip has led to Kaguya becoming one of the more popular shows of the Winter 2019 season, but how does it stack up against the rest? Can it live up to the infamy of Chika and her dance?

Summary

The story of Kaguya-sama follows the student council of Shuchiin Academy, which includes 4 members. The however the plot mainly revolves around the president, Miyuki Shirogane, and vice-president, Kaguya Shinomiya. Chika Fujiwara, the secretary, and Yu Ishigami, the treasurer, are more-so there for comedic relief.

The premise is this: Miyuki and Kaguya are in love with each other, and acknowledge that the other probably feels the same way, but neither of them want to confess. This is because neither of them wants to be seen as weaker in the relationship, so they try to get the other to confess. However, they’re both extremely smart, meaning instead of regular romantic talk, we get mental battles between the two. So through all these battles, the comedy ensues.

Review

So enough summary, how good is it? Well, the answer is similar to most comedies. It depends on your sense of humor. Personally, I felt that the show got off to a strong start, and began to get repetitive around episode 7. There’s only so many places you can take a concept to form humor of it, and it didn’t feel as creative later on. I also felt that it ended on a poor note, but I can’t get into that without spoiling. This isn’t to say Kaguya is unenjoyable though. There’s definitely scenes and entire episodes I found pretty funny, with clever jokes written in.

In terms of animation and sound design, Kaguya was decent, but not super memorable in either. Animation wise, it had some cool visual presentation, with all the cuts and angles shown during Miyuki and Kaguya facing off. This helps with the set and outfit design, which felt relatively bland. No music really stood out in the OST to me, but none felt out of place either. I also felt that the voice actors all gave pretty solid performances.

Conclusion

Overall, I would give Kaguya a strong 6 to a light seven 7 out of 10. The upsides are definitely there, with some funny episodes and scenes, but it’s not super consistent in getting laughs from me. I would recommend everyone to watch the first one or two episodes and judge it yourself however, since humor is subjective. If you find any enjoyment from those first two episodes, then you’ll probably enjoy most of it. If not, then you probably won’t enjoy any of it. But either way, it doesn’t matter too much as long as the show gave us the Chika dance.

Mawaru Penguindrum Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Mawaru Penguindrum
MAL Score: 8.01
Episodes: 24
Genres: Mystery, Comedy, Dementia, Psychological, Drama

” I hate the word “fate” “.

Mawaru Penguindrum aired in 2011 by studio Brain’s base and directed by Ikuhara, Kunihiko is a story about Takakura’s family – Twin brothers Kanba and Shouma, along with their younger sister Himari.

Story

Entire plot spins around Takakura family and their problems with “fate” and himawari’s incurable disease, to save her, they need to find Penguin drum. Same story was quite interesting, with good pacing, good amount of dramatic along with comedic relief or funny scenes. Everything with big amount of symbolism and metaphors in various scenes, sometimes happy ones, sad, dramatic and bittersweet ones.

Animation

Personally I didn’t see too many flaws in animation or art, rather it was very well made. It was very colorful, with beautiful moments. The same goes for character designs and way they were expressing themselves where every single one was quite unique, with their own special lines and quotes. Animation felt very smooth, with many awesome detailed, colorful backgrounds.

Soundtrack

Personally one of strongest points of this show for me. Starting with opening “Nornir” by Yakushimaru Etsuko, through to other songs like “Fate of the Sons of Flame – Scorpion & Fruti Wheel” “Unmei no kotachi” or “Namida no Umi” and many others. Most of them beautifully emphasized many scenes, making them even more powerful and emotional.

Characters

In my opinion every character got very good, detailed and proper development along with their own past backstory and problems with which they need to deal. Obsession, revenge, forgiveness, grief – and many others, we can see characters in big amount of mental states and how they are dealing with them. Be it the cool, serious and sometimes ruthless Kanba, brave and more innocent Shouma. Then the always cheerful Himari, obsessed with her fate and future Ringo, or mysterious Watase. Yet is rather short and shallow description of characters, where every single one get their time to shine with their expression. Very noticeable background characters are penguins which express mental and physical state of the Takakura family, but also make great amount of less serious and comedic relief which adds even more variety to show.

Overall summary

Mawaru penguindrum was one of most unique shows I have ever seen, with very well-written characters. I also enjoyed the beautiful, smooth animation, great soundtrack and awesome story. I especially enjoyed the very emotional finale, but the many moments which gave us a lot to think about. Certainly recommend, personal rating 9.5/10.

Dr. Stone Review or “How a boy can revive the whole civilization from the start”

Media: Manga, Anime (Summer 2019)
Name: Dr. Stone
MAL Rating: 8.01/10 (N/A for Anime version)

Summer 2019 season is gonna be hot for sure. And not because of the bright sun, but there will be a lot of titles I would recommend for watching. This summer will be special for me, because of one specific title. It has been waiting for a long time for its chance to appear on screens. This is “Dr. Stone” by Riichiro Inagaki (Eyeshield 21) and Boichi (Trigun, Sun-Ken Rock). It is about people overcoming the “second prehistoric era” ( without dinosaurs though). And they live in the wild and dangerous world they once called their home.

After everyone had fallen under strange petrification disease, several thousand years had passed. Numerous cities and villages got covered with vegetation, thus having transformed into the ruins of history. The protagonist of this story is Senkuu – the one young genius, who was busy with multiple scientific projects before the world disaster occured, but became the hope for all humanity. His friend, Taiju, becomes the second man to be revived after Senkuu, and from this point the actual story begins.

The plot is rather simple – survive and find out what happened, but it is filled with a lot of interesting stuff, which makes “Dr. Stone” unique on its own: from discovering different technologies 1000 times faster than the history of humanity can remember, to some serious questions about society and wars. It has a good deal of comedy, which perfectly adds the charm to the title, while it doesn’t forget about the romantic side, that is quite common in those stories.

Summary

Yes, the spring season has only just begun, and there is a lot of time till the summer, but if you like this kind of anime – you would want to include “Dr. Stone” to those “Must see” titles of the next season. And for those, that cannot wait – they can read manga. They will not be disappointed with it, I promise!

MAL Score: 8.87/10
Episodes: 22
Genres: Drama, Music, Romance, School, Shounen

About the anime

Before we start let me warn you, there is going to be quite an amount of spoiled parts from anime.

Piano prodigy Kōsei Arima dominated various music competitions and has become famous among child musicians, but also controversial. After the death of his mother, he had a mental breakdown at the age of eleven while performing at a piano recital which resulted in him no longer being able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing was perfectly fine.

Four years later, Kōsei hasn’t touched the piano and views the world in monochrome, without any flair or color. He resigns himself to living out his life with his good friends, Tsubaki and Watari, until, one day, he meets a girl who changes everything in his life.

Kaori is later discharged from the hospital. Later on, she invites Kōsei to play at a Gala with her. However, Kaori fails to show up on the day of the Gala, and as her health worsens, and she begins to give up on life. This time, Kōsei is the one who inspires her after playing a duet with Nagi Aiza, the pianist sister of a fellow rival of his named Takeshi Aiza. After shedding tears and listening to it, Kaori opts for a risky surgery that may kill her if it fails.

What happens next, is up to you to find out.

Overall I think the anime was ok, each person has their own taste. If you have anything to say, don’t be scared, feel free to drop it in the comment box.

Initial D Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Initial D
MAL Score: 8.29
Episodes: 87
Seasons: 10 (Movies included)
Genres: Action, Cars, Drama, Seinen, Sports
About the anime:

Before we start let me warn you, there is going to be quite an amount of spoiled parts from anime.

The protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara, is a gas station attendant working with his friend Itsuki to buy a car, which they plan to drift on the twisting roads surrounding nearby Mount Akina. Unbeknownst to his colleagues, Takumi moonlights as a tofu delivery driver for his father’s store before sunrise each morning, passively building an impressive amount of skill behind the wheel of the family car, an aging Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86.

Shortly after the story begins, the Red Suns, a racing team from Mount Akagi, challenge the local Speedstars team to a set of races on Mount Akina. Dispirited after watching the Red Suns’ superior performance during a practice run, the Speedstars expect to lose. Later that night, the Red Suns’ driver, Keisuke Takahashi heading home after the last practice run, is defeated by a mysterious Sprinter Trueno, despite driving a much more powerful car, Mazda RX-7. After an investigation into the identity of the driver leads to Bunta Fujiwara, Takumi’s father. The Speedstars beg Bunta to help them defeat the Red Suns, but he initially refuses, later relenting to “maybe” show up at the race. At the same time, Takumi asks Bunta if he can borrow the car for a day to take a trip to the beach with a potential girlfriend Natsuki Mogi. Bunta allows Takumi to go on a trip to the beach, borrowing his car and giving a full tank of fuel on one condition that he needs to beat Red Suns driver.

On the night of the race, the Trueno does not show up, and the Speedstars enlist a backup driver for the first run. At the last moment, before the race starts, the Trueno arrives. Takumi steps out of the car to the bewilderment of the Speedstars, who were expecting Bunta. Without any further arguments, Kouichirou Iketani lets Takumi drive, realizing several facts from previously heard rumors and trusting that Bunta won’t send Takumi without any consideration. Later on, in the race, he easily defeats the Red Suns driver Keisuke Takaha by utilizing a dangerous technique on the mountain road’s hairpin corners.

The Red Suns’ embarrassing defeat sets up the plot for the rest of the series: drivers from neighboring prefectures come to challenge Takumi and the “Legendary Eight-Six of Akina” and thus prove themselves as racers.

Eventually, the plot moves away from Mount Akina as Takumi becomes bored with racing solely on that road.

Several events happened with a lot’s of victories for Takumi but at one moment in the battle against Kyoichi at Akagi Sprinter Trueno motor can’t handle the huge load, which causes the engine to blow out.

Takumi was shocked, looking at AE86 as the steam is coming out of the engine… Later on, Buta comes with a truck and picks up Takumi and Sprinter Trueno. Although Takumi wasn’t expecting the event like this, Bunta knew this was going to happen sooner or later. Thanks to the contacts from different organizations Bunta gets powerful race engine for Sprinter Trueno. At the time Takumi was delivering tofu as usual but with a different car. One night Takumi was shocked when he saw the same AE86 on the road passing him with such a speed. Later on, Takumi finds out that the engine has been replaced and after a while, he can participate in the events again.

Later on, he joins an experimental racing team formed by the disbanded Red Suns also know as Project D and challenges more difficult opponents on their home courses in the pursuit of his dream to be “the fastest driver out there”.

After several events, Takumi manages to damage the car again but this time they could fix it. At that time Takumi finds out there is are people who try to act as Project D members. Later on, they got revealed and got their lesson.

At the last event, Takumi drives again a powerful AE86 driver, which leads to several difficult problems in the race…

The first seasons might not be as good in quality as the following ones, if you would ask me, this was one of my favorite anime of all time, I could judge it in several factors although the story itself was fun and intense. You couldn’t even predict what might happen at the some of the races.

This might not be the best review from my side, but I tried to tell at least some part… it is easier if you watch the anime and see it yourself.

Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice)
MAL Score: 9.04/10, IMDB Rating: 8.2/10
Movie:1
Genres: Drama, School, Shounen, Romance
About the anime:

Before we start let me warn you, there is going to be quite an amount of spoiled parts from anime

One day in elementary school, in which the main character Shouya Ishida was studying, got a new transfer student named Shouko Nishimiya(deaf student).

After that, she tries to make several friends but in the end, gets bullied which leads her to transfer to another school.

Of course, in the middle of that, there was an incident where the teacher was looking for the bully who destroyed or throw away several hearing devices which resulted in Shouya Ishida getting all the blame on him while his friends denied that they had participated in any of it.

After several years Shouya Ishida meets Shouko Nishimiya again. This time Shouya Ishida have learned sign language and tries to apologize to her but instead, she runs away. Later on, they get over it and get to be really close friends. Of course, several events happen during the movie which leads to some arguments between their friends, but in the end, after the accident, all of them stayed together.

It is hard to review the whole movie, it won’t be fun at all to watch it otherwise… The movie has a pretty deep meaning about the life of several different people from real life. This might change your view on the world’s society. As much as I can say this movie represents a lot of things that only you might understand (I hope you would). I rated this anime really high (as score it is 9 but I might think over this and rate it to 10 maybe). This anime will awake your dead emotions that’s for sure.

No. 6 Review

Media: Anime

Name: No. 6

MAL Rating: 7.72/10

Description

Six city states rose after a long and bloody war waged in the world. Life, for a time, seemed perfect, utopian but there were many evils hiding under the surface. No. 6 follows the story of a young boy by the name of Shion who has lived his life in the wealth of city-state No. 6 along with his mother who owned a bakery. After a loud ringing sounds in the distance during a large storm, a mysterious boy enters his room. Shion agrees to help him with a wound, who introduces himself as Nezumi, or Rat, who is also a fugitive. This chance encounter changes Shions life who is then banished from the city losing he and his mother’s elite status within the city. The change of location made Shion learn a lot about the differences in life style and how life may not be as utopian as he once thought.

Years later and the two meet again and work together to expose the secrets behind the increase of mysterious deaths within No. 6.

This, personally, is one of my favorite anime. The anime adaptation differs slightly from its light novel counterpart, but both are enjoyable.

Death Parade Anime Review

Media: Anime
Name: Death Parade
MAL Score: 8.26/10
Episodes: 12
Seasons:
Genres: Game, Mystery, Psychological, Drama, Thriller

About the anime

Before we start let me warn you, there is going to be quite an amount of spoiled parts from anime.

After death, there is no heaven or hell. Whenever someone dies they get sent to the bar(s). When the souls leave the elevator and enter the bar they will meet mysterious bartenders (also known as arbiters). They will ask questions and gives them several explanations till the time comes when they tell them to play a game. The bartender threatens the souls with an illusion of them in an unfortunate situation. With this, he tells them that if they don’t play the game that might happen to them.

As the souls accept to play the game, the bartender gives them a button, in which case the game will be chosen. Whilst the game starts the bartender starts to judge the two souls. While playing the game each soul will remember bits from their last moments before their death. When the game ends bartenders will decide which soul will go to the void and which soul will be sent for reincarnation.

Of course, without the pain, there is no game! As the souls play the game they might get a different pain in their body, as thanks to that, they get to remember the last bits before the death. In some cases, the game might lead to huge conflicts which might end with the other soul wanting to kill the other one.

Several things get explained. In the end, one of the bartenders, which did not have any emotions, finally manages to find them thanks to a soul which was working in a bar at that time, but what happened to the soul, that might be interesting.

I personally enjoyed it, rated it with a score of 9. There have been rumors around the websites from people, that there might be a 2nd season. As I didn’t want to spoil much about each game and each soul history the review ended up kinda pretty short. I think I didn’t miss much about the anime.
